In this video, Dwayne D. Williams discusses the importance of culturally relevant, student centered instruction and Tier 2 SEL groups. He explains that students often learn and function in environments that are dissimilar to their cultural environments. Although there are an array of interventions available for students who struggle to manage their emotions, many students who come from culturally diverse backgrounds do not respond to the interventions because they believe the interventions are boring. An important question, then, is this: How do we modify our programs to integrate instruction with the passions, interests, and cultural values of our students to increase academic motivation and engagement in the classroom?
